‘At the end the Germans always win’

To score four goals against a top Spanish club in the last decade or two has been quite a difficult task for just about every team in European football. Well, not exactly – because German rivals Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both managed to turn this fabulous feat into reality within just 24 hours.

On Tuesday evening, the Bavarians scattered the mighty Barcelona forcing Victor Valdes to trudge to the back of his team’s net four times in order to pick up the “missing” ball.

One day later, it was the black-and-yellow Ruhr side’s turn to stun football giants Real Madrid, the team with the most packed trophy case – including nine Champions League titles. Following unrivaled Robert Lewandowski’s rhythm, Juergen Klopp’s team crushed Real 4-1.

Winning words

The one person definitely not shocked by the impressive double German victories was Gary Lineker. His famous quote “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win” proves he surely respects the football skill of German players.

As for the upcoming Champions League Final at Wembley, the former England striker repeated his prediction:

If both Bayern and Borussia successfully defend their wide home lead on Spanish soil, then the Wembley Final will be a strictly German affair.

Historical Comebacks

Three times in the past, Real Madrid have came back from three-goals behind to qualify for the next round of European competitions.

In the Second Round of the 1975 – 1976 Champions Cup, Real faced English side Derby County. The Spanish team had lost 4-1 in the British leg but managed to turn the tables in Madrid, winning by the same result. They eventually progressed to the next round thanks to a goal from Santigiana in overtime for the final 5-1 result.

In the third round of the 1984-1985 UEFA Cup, Belgian side Anderlecht managed to beat Real by 3-0 in the first match in Brussels. But, the Merengues thrashed them mercilessly 6-1 in the rematch at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

In the third round of the 1985-1986 UEFA Cup, another Borussia team – the one from Menchengladbach – achieved an epic 5-1 victory over Real in Germany. However, later in Spain, a transformed Real turned things upside down, winning 4-0 and qualifying for the next round.
